The Somerset College Celebration of Literature  -10 to 14 March 2008

The Celebration of Literature held at Somerset College is now in its 15th year, is widely recognised as Australia’s premier school literary festival and offers book-lovers of all ages the opportunity to meet their favourite authors.

Some 30 writers and illustrators will take part in the 2008 Celebration of Literature in a lineup that includes established authors and newcomers who will stage a series of interactive workshops that offer readers the chance to meet, discuss and learn not only about specific books, but also about the craft of writing.

Crime writer Garry Disher, who will be giving workshops at the festival, is an outstanding example. He has a huge readership in Europe, and particularly in Germany where he has twice won the National Crime Fiction Prize. His most recent book, Chain of Evidence, took out Australia’s Best Crime Novel award in 2007.

The festival will also feature entertainment, including a Free Kids Concert; book launches; author signings; cocktail party; great debate; champagne brunch; and a literary dinner. Celebration of Literature chairperson Michael Brohier says the aim of the festival is to spur students to have fun with books and to encourage parents to read to their children.

Mr Brohier says the festival was instigated after a small group of Somerset College parents and teachers found themselves talking in the school library one day about how wonderful it would be for students to meet the people behind the books they read. Today, the Celebration of Literature is regarded as one of Australia’s leading literary events; a festival that, although its primary focus is children and young adults, also has much to offer adults.
